Podcast: The PrintPod episode 13: How customisation is reshaping packaging, with Andrew Boyd

Posted on

In this insightful episode of The PrintPod, Infigo’s podcast dedicated to all things print and marketing, Alex Bowell welcomes Andrew Boyd, President of Blue Label Packaging in Lancaster, Ohio, for a fascinating discussion about the company’s journey in the label industry.

The episode explores how Blue Label Packaging has navigated the evolving market landscape and established itself as a leader in digital label printing.

Growing from 6 to 150 employees

Blue Label’s story begins in the world of offset printing, focusing on envelopes for various industries. However, in 2003, the company made a pivotal shift to digital label printing, initially serving as a trade-only provider. By 2012, Blue Label launched its own brand, targeting the craft beer, wine, and spirits market, and grew from six employees to 150.

Today, it is an all-digital facility that produces pressure-sensitive labels, shrink sleeves, and tags, operating around the clock.

Andrew Boyd reflects on the key trends shaping the industry, noting the increasing demand for bespoke packaging, tailored to brand-specific needs. This shift is driven by changing consumer behaviours and the rise of e-commerce. He emphasises that while digital technology facilitates this transformation, the true drivers are the evolving tastes and expectations of brands and customers.

Environmental concerns will drive packaging trends

Andrew envisions a future of continued innovation in packaging materials and forms, with flexible packaging leading the way. Andrew says environmental concerns will be a significant driver of this.

He says: “The US is probably catching up to Europe in terms of a lot of environmental regulation. That has huge implications for the packaging space – what’s recyclable? Are materials compostable?

“A lot of things are done state by state and we sell into Canada a lot. Canada has different sets of regulations than we do, so I think getting ahead of environmental regulations will be a big concern and starting to think bigger than just the traditional materials and substrates you’re used to, because things will be changing over the next 10 years.”

Streamlined operations with cutting edge solutions

Technology and innovation are central to Blue Label’s success. Andrew highlights how the company utilises cutting-edge solutions to enhance customer experiences and streamline operations. By partnering with tech companies like Infigo and CERM, Blue Label has automated workflows and integrated digital solutions.

From artwork automation to seamless connections with production equipment, these technologies ensure efficiency and scalability.

Despite its achievements, Blue Label has faced significant challenges. Andrew acknowledges the impact of industry consolidation, which has increased competition and put pressure on mid-sized players to excel in service, quality, and cost-efficiency. Environmental regulations also pose challenges, requiring initiative-taking adaptation to new standards for recyclable and compostable materials.

Growing force in the community

On a personal note, Andrew shares his reflections on leading Blue Label through its transformative journey. He takes pride in the company’s role as a growing force in the community and values the opportunity to develop new leaders.

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys golf, spending time with his family, and supporting his beloved Luton Town football team (despite him being based in the US).

He also appreciates the global connections fostered by the printing industry, which have allowed him to meet and collaborate with people from around the world.

The episode concludes with Alex and Andrew emphasising the strength of the partnership between Blue Label and Infigo. Both companies share a commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions, ensuring that Blue Label stays at the forefront of the industry. With a focus on growth, technology, and sustainability, Blue Label is poised to lead the label industry into the future.
